I know that at some point between 1994 and 2004 Mercedes-Benz went from making some of the best cars in the world to some of the worst cars in the world. I am planning on buying an old Mercedes, as they are beautiful cars (please don’t tell me that I should buy something else, that’s not what I’m asking in this question) and I would like to know exactly what year Mercedes started making poor quality cars. Please give me a specific year, so I will know that I should buy cars made before that year.

This is from my experience with these cars. MB started to drop in quality around year 2000. I say that because it has to do with the model you buy. The quality was horrible with the introduction of the 1998 ML class which was produced in Alabama. Then latter the C class, but that wasn’t the most reliable Benz to start with. The E class on the other side quality wise has remained the same in my opinion. I have owned two E class in the past a 97, 98 and currently have a 2002 E320. They only had improved over the years.
All of them have been excellent cars, and one of them had over 200k miles when I sold it.
That being said, my other car is a 2000 ML320 the same engine as a E320 but that is the only good thing on that car. Even though it is not a horrible car is has too many issues that it should not have being a Benz. They have too many electrical problems, such as ABS/window regulators/traction control, and the list goes on. The C class is not much better and if you check one out you will see how cheap they are build. Well, if you have some experience with Mercedes Benz.
There are two things I would recommend, 1st whichever model your buy, try to buy the 320 (M112,V6) engine, and you will be happy that you did for a very long time. They are an excellent engine and are good on gas. 2nd. I would avoid at any cost the C class.
I don’t think they ever made bad cars. They just got to the point where most people couldn’t afford them. Audi was like that too.
