Out of the several ways to deter theft two stand out for me:
1. Putting the thing in a place such as a garage… they can’t steal what they can’t see.(out of sight out of mind)
2. Without availability of getting it out of sight, being outside is the only other option but it doesn’t have to be too visible. Putting it out of sight and not so easy to spot helps, but that has disadvantages as well… (gives the thief privacy) Making it difficult to steal with measures (all good suggestions previously mentioned) like a good size chain, disc lock, an alarm system that incorporates its own power system, a loud siren and ignition shutdown, and perhaps parking it where access would be a miracle (blocking it in a tight spot with a car)
If a thief has to get past so many layers of security that moving on would be easier, then I’d call that an effective deterrent.
While it is true that if a thief wants it bad enough they will get it, there’s no reason to give them a written invitation. I see bikes all the time just begging to get stolen,…. it’s as if the owners don’t even want them.
Do yourself a favor and make sure to get any and all discounts from your insurance company that apply to the theft deterrent measures you employ.
Here is the fundamental issue concerning motorcycle theft:
Unlike cars, most motorcycles can be physically lifted off of the ground with only the force of one or two people.
Basically, when someone attempts to boost a car, they have to disable the safety features at the location where you last left your car (in public). In contrast, someone can literally pick up your bike and take it to a private garage and work on the security there.
Lo-jack helps, but because of the rather significant cost, your best bet is comprehensive coverage.
Best would be to be careful where you park your bike. Try to park on the street, in high traffic areas, not behind a bar or something like that. Generally someone will put your bike in teh back of a truck to steal it so if you keep it in an area where people are or where it’s visible to you this will be less likely.
Most bikes also have a lock on the front forks where you can lock your wheel ****** to the right or left, this will make it harder for someone to roll your bike away.
You can also always get lojack.
Also, keep full coverage insurance so if something does happen your covered.
hmm.
interesting WHY?
so you can thwart them or look to circumvent them?
or are you just planning a hyper safe bike.
I won’t tell you what to use but here are the rules.
1 make the bike less desirable to the thief so don’t buy an R1; buy a less popular or more obscure model.
2 Make it and every component identifiable to you so mark it indelibly.
3 make it noisy if touched to attract attention of others and dissuade the thief
4make it immovable by securing it to something large
5 make it in complete so remove a large important component
6 make it so you can follow it electronically.
Either put it somewhere where no one can see it (inside a locked garage) or put it in in a highly visible area (such as under a street light).
Use a disc brake lock, block in the bike with your car if you have one (I use this trick), chain the bike to a large/immobile object, have an alarm/tracking device installed.
A lot of thefts are crimes of opportunity. No one (or even several deterrents) are fool-proof but if you make it difficult enough to steal, most would-be-thieves will move on to an easier target.
Both previous suggestions are great. You might also try a discus padlock on the neck lock. Also a brake caliper locking system. a 5′ section of heavy logging chain and a huge padlock will work if you have to chain the bike to something, but it,s a hassle to haul around with you. Just remember that if someone wants something bad enough, nothing will stop them. Good security will usually make them move on to an easier target.
The very best deterrent I’ve ever seen was a large dog tied to a bike.
Chaining a bike to an immovable object with a coated cable (bolt cutter-proof) works well, too.
a gun, or a dog, provided your motorcycle is on your property.
Ride a rat bike, no one wants to steal them.
Lock it up out of plain sight is one way not to get it stolen.
