In Car Racing, Is There A Difference Between Rallying And Rallycross? What Is The Difference?

A rallycross is a time trial type run through a closed course on dirt. Basically, picture a huge dirt field with the entire course marked by cones. Cars take turns going thru the course for the fastest possible time.
Rallying is more a general term. It can refer to a group of cars having a meet. Depending on spelling, ie rallye, it can mean a timed course run on the streets within legal speed limits. This is more of a scavenger type of competition with cars. And of course it could mean a high speed racing contest thru city streets and country roads. When referring to this type of competition, usually the term “stage rally” is used as the race is done thru several stages of different courses such as the famed WRC rallys.

I may be wrong, but I believe a ‘rally’ is conducted at least partly on public roadways, while a ‘rallycross’ is done on a race track or a closed course.

  • Hi,
Rallying is limited to specific stages – This could be in Forests, Streets or ‘Single Venue’ stages. Each competitor is set off usually at 30 second or 1 minute intervals and whoever gets the fastest time, wins.

Rallycross is a little more pleasing for the spectator. In the UK (MSA BRC) we have grids of up to eight cars who are ‘set off’ at the same time via red/green lighting system. Generally speaking, 3-4 laps of the Rallycross circuit (Lydden Hill, Knockhill, Mallory Park etc) are completed – The racing is very close and competitors need to ‘score’ the fastest time possible which determines grid slots for the finals.

Rallycross in Europe has a major following across 10 rounds of the ERC where you can witness serious professional competition between the top 20-30 cars.

Rallycross Supercars (or Division 1 in Europe) produce 550BHP and silly amounts of torque through 4WD, they are capable of out-accelerating F1 cars (0-60mph under 2 seconds) – All cars with the exception of BRC group ‘B’ are based on major factory produced cars such as Ford Focus, Fiesta, Citroen C4, Volvo S40 etc.

Development for the Citroen World Rally Car C4 is often made via the works backed Citroen team in Europe.

There are no cones or dirt fields in Rallycross.
