How Can I Recondition An Older Motorcycle?

I have a 1978 Honda CB 400 and I want to give it a tune up, etc and get it back in shape.
It’s not in terrible condition right now, but it’s not running as smoothly as I would like or start as quickly as it could. I don’t know a whole lot about motorcycle maintainence, so what should i do to get it back in good condition?

I’d suggest you get a shop or repair manual for the bike. If you’ve got cash and really want to restore the bike I’d go with the first answer. If you’re just looking to get the bike running a little better on a limited budget here’s what I might try. Your bike needs three things to run at all, fuel, air and spark. Do want you can on your budget to improve them. Cheapest way would be a fuel system cleaner like Chemtol B-13. Pour a can in the gas tank and maybe some of the aerosol sprayed directly into the throat of the carburetor. I’m thinking at some point the bikes been sitting for a while and old gas and condensation could be present in the tank and carburetor. That’s the cheapest way to clean your fuel system, better way rebuild them or have the rebuilt. Air, replace the air cleaner and clean the air box. Spark, I’d be a good guess you have points, change them, the proper gap is stated in the manual you just got. Check your plug wires for age and breakdown. If you run the bike in a dark place at night and look along the plug wires you’ll see arcing from the plug wires to some sort of ground, frame, engine or each other if they’re old and have broken down. Then check your plugs for condition and gap. That’s the low budget, backyard mechanic way, you only go up from here. In results and expense. Good luck

cange the oil change the air filter to a K and N filter and have the carbs synchronized and change the plugs and wires. also a new fuel filter . You can do everything yourself without special tools except synchronizing the carbs which you can do after buying a set of gauges and a shop manual. step one GET THE BOOK!!!! and one more thing convert it to electronic ignition if it has points!!!!

well if you want the bike to run good or have it look good is up 2 you. you dont need mutch experiance to do simple tyhings to keep your bike up. use the firt anwser to get the engine working good. but also chek the bearings and bushings. all you have to do is try to wigle the tiers and swing arm. if they are lose you need to get them replaced or you will be fixing mor ethan just bearings and bushings. also see how the steering berings feel. if when u turn it you her craking you need to fix them.

Get a manual first. What you should do is spark plugs ,fuel filter and check or replace air filter. If bike has points, you should seriously consider getting electronic ignition. At least check your timing. Clean carbs if your up to it. Alot of things you can do if you take your time, keep everything organized so you know where it goes when it’s time to put it together. You don’t have to do all at once. Maybe you can save the bigger jobs for winter. There’s nothing like being able to fix your own bike. Good luck.
