Any tips for a car trip with a young baby?

We are taking our daughter to visit family when she is 6 wks old. The trip is about 350 miles, in the car, and it took us 5-6 hours before we had her. She usually sleeps well in the car, but I can’t imagine she’ll sleep that long (nor do I really want her to, because then she’ll be up all night). I’m planning on riding in the backseat with her. Anyone have any tips on how to make the trip tolerable for all of us?

Drive through the night and take turns driving. Make sure you get heaps of rest the day before.

This is what worked for me when I took my daughter on a long trip when she was around that age. Try to leave during the day so that her night schedule will not get messed up. Make frequent stops (about 2 or so) to feed her and to interact with her so she doesn’t sleep the whole trip. What is nice about this age is that they sleep a lot so you don’t have to make a lot of stops. Hope this helps out some.

We drove 600 miles with each of our children when they were 5-6 weeks old. It took us about 12 hours instead of 10, but it wasn’t horrible. Maybe have some new colorful toys and be sure to have a couple of decent stops so she can get out of her carseat and stretch.

we went for about a 12hr car trip when my niece was a bit older than your little girl, but she slept almost the whole time.

We left late evening and drove through the night, it was tiring but I think it was the best idea because she really did sleep just about the whole time. Either sit back with her, or sit up front with hubby and enjoy some time and keep each other company, but make sure that you have a ‘path’ to get back to her if she fusses. We stopped every 2-3 hours to feed her and take her out of her seat and change her diaper if needed.

Bring a couple toys but don’t pack too much, she will be sleeping most of the time plus you will probably be bringing back more than you came with!

Plan on stops – so don’t stress if it takes a bit longer.

I don’t think you need to ride in the backseat with her, especially if she’s asleep. Enjoy the conversation with your sweetie. The baby might just sleep the entire time. If she doesn’t, pull over, get lunch for you, nurse the baby, change her diaper and get back on the road.
